Art Elective Programme (AEP)

Overview

The Art Elective Programme (AEP) is designed to enable pupils with both academic and artistic abilities to undertake a challenging Art programme. It aims to develop pupils’ conceptual and analytical faculties by placing equal emphasis on both the practical and theoretical aspects of Art. Pupils are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings and ideas through a variety of art practices. Pupils also develop skills to make critical judgements about artworks and art practices through the study of visual arts.

Programme

The AEP is a four-year course that prepares pupils for the GCE ‘O’ Level Higher Art Examination. Pupils selected for the AEP will take Higher Art in place of Design & Technology and Home Economics at the lower secondary level. In the mainstream schools, AEP pupils are expected to complete the four-year course and offer Higher Art as a subject for examination at the GCE ‘O’ Level. AEP pupils in the Integrated Programme (IP) schools offer H2 and H3 Art as examination subjects at the GCE ‘A’ Level.

Admission

Pupils interested in the AEP are advised to select schools offering the programme among the six choices of school. They are encouraged to select anAEP school as their first choice.

To qualify for the AEP, the pupil must first meet the entry requirement of the Express courses in the selected school. Upon admission to the school, the pupil must apply for the programme at the school and must pass an internal AEP Selection Test set by the school.
Higher Art in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination is equivalent to a Humanities subject. Pupils who offer Higher Art will be allowed to use the Art grade as a Humanities subject grade for admission to JC/MI.

Pupils can expect regular enrichment activities over the four years as an AEP student. These include:

• Visits to galleries, museums and major local art shows,
• Talks & Workshops by artists,
• Participation in both local and international competitions,
• Overseas learning journeys,
• Participation in school-based art exhibitions,
• Participation annual combined AEP workshop,
• Participation in the bi-annual AEP exhibition.
